Clinical and Basic Research

Scottish Epilepsy Initiative aims to raise money to support interdisciplinary research in epilepsy in Scotland.   This will encompass scientific, clinical and service related projects.

We will only fund protocols that have the potential to improve the lives of people with epilepsy in Scotland.   At present only around 50% of the estimated 40,000 Scots with epilepsy are seizure-free. With best practice, this number could be substantially increased. Because of its unpredictable nature and unique stigma, epilepsy can substantially impair a person’s quality of life.   In addition, sudden unexpected death as a result of uncontrolled epileptic seizures is on the increase.
